No Vaya, Fred

My friend Fred Carroll is on the fence, debating whether or not he should resign his place on the Common Council ballot. His replacement, if necessary, is already scheduled to take place outside of O'Rourke's at 8 A.M. this Friday morning. Many of my supporters wish him good riddance, seeing my association with a bum with nothing but a broom and a bike as a drag on my chances to get elected Mayor. That may be so. At times, the antics of the man bother me. The time recently when he alienated a lawyer, who I had hoped would represent me against the City, comes to mind. But this party was created to empower the powerless, not to shun them when, in weak moments, they fail to shine at their best. That description fits us all, and Fred is one of us. None other can take his place, and so I encourage him to stand his ground against the tide of doubts, in our flawed system, and our flawed selves.
